New Cinema, Digital Culture & Art

Abandon Normal Devices (AND) brings you a festival of new cinema, digital culture and art. A site for discovery and adventure,  AND Festival at Grizedale Forest will create a space where audiences can experience the forest anew through inviting world-class artists to create new art works for the historical site.

Turning the forest into a laboratory, Grizedale Forest will become a temporary haven for filmmakers, artists, creative technologists, philosophers and scientists, who will explore the secret infrastructure of the forest and natures processes. The programme will provide new perspectives on the forest, through the eyes of the plants, animals and machines that inhabit it, allowing visitors an insight into natures technologies as well as emerging trends in digital practice.

Interventions into the existing sculpture park include a virtual reality experience called In the Eyes of the Animal from Marshmallow Laser Feast which has been filmed using drones and invites audiences to experience the forest through the journey of three species common to the site. We also premiere a new edition of Brandon Ballengee’s Love Motel for Insects which is site specific to Grizedale Forest and will take the form of a large-scale living sculpture intended to construct situations between humans and the arthropods that live there.

Alongside collaborations with our M&S partners including: a bespoke communication network, powered by wind, solar and water, which will be distributed throughout the site from Slovenian artistic collective BridA. And the Slovenian experimenter Sašo Sedlaček with be performing his Origami Space Race launching origami planes with the use of mobile technology.

At the heart of the festival is an exhibition dedicated to understanding plant intelligence and the smart forest. “Seeing the Forest Through the Trees” will be a living exhibition, which will look at the lifestyle of plants, curated by Monika Bakke and featuring artists Karl Heinz Jeron, Chiara Esposito, Spela Petric, Dimitris Stamatis and Jasmina Weiss, Pei- Ying Lin.
